The patron Jürgen von Ungern-Sternberg (1940) was born in Germany, a representative of an ancient Baltic German family with origins in Livonia dating back to the beginning of the 13th century. He was the professor of history in the old University of Basel who had facilitated the development of history studies in Latvia. Honorary Doctor of the University of Latvia.

Bernhardt Albert von Hollander, 1856–1937 was a grandfather of Jűrgen von Ungern-Sternberg. The German-Baltic historian B. von Hollander is an author of notable studies on 19th century Riga, medieval Livonian history and other topics. For centuries, Latvia and Estonia were the homeland of the von Hollanders and von Ungern-Sternbergs.

In 1999, Jürgen von Ungern-Sternberg donated 50 000 Swiss francs in support to history studies.

In 2003, for the first time at the University of Latvia Faculty of History and Philosophy the Bernhard von Hollander/Jürgen von Ungern-Sternberg Scholarship was awarded to doctoral student Mārtiņš Mintaurs. The Jürgen von Ungern-Sternberg Scholarship in the amount of EUR 1 000 is awarded to the most talented doctoral or master’s programme student.
