The Nippon Foundation, a global philanthropic organization, was founded in 1962 in Japan. Its work is characterized by two principles: first, the belief that there can be no obstacles in the world to help other people. Second, faith in partnership – the Nippon Foundation believes that it is not capable of knowing the needs of every single place in the world, therefore it seeks and selects reliable local partners and backs them with its own resources. The work of the Nippon Foundation is carried out in two phases, through social change achieving social innovation.
The Nippon Foundation's grant to the University of Latvia is made out of the Ryoichi Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship Fund Program, or SYLFF. The SYLFF programme was created in 1987. It is currently implemented through a partnership between the Nippon Foundation, which finances the programme, and the Tokyo Foundation, which administers the programme.
The SYLFF programme aims to develop future leaders capable of overcoming geopolitical, religious, ethnic and cultural barriers in order to play an active role in the well-being of all mankind and the maintenance of global peace. The SYLFF programme has supported 45 countries worldwide and 69 higher education institutions by awarding scholarships to talented students, thus helping to achieve programme goals.
You can find out more about the Nippon Foundation on the organization's website. More information about SYLFF and the Tokyo Foundation is available on the website.
Support
In 2002, the Nippon Foundation transferred an open-ended grant of USD 1 000 000 to the University of Latvia to be used as an endowment. The University of Latvia grants the scholarships to the graduates and doctoral students of the humanities and social sciences from the return of this deposit. The scholarship programme aims to develop future leaders capable of overcoming geopolitical, religious, ethnic and cultural barriers in order to play an active role in promoting the well-being of all mankind and ensuring global peace.
We greatly appreciate the generous support to education and development!
