At the end of the project "Restoration of the Star Globe," funded by the Culture Capital Foundation of Latvia, the Museum of the University of Latvia invites you to an online presentation about the restoration's process on January 16, 2023 at 10 a.m.
The Star Globe made in the 1920s is one of the largest artifacts in the collection of the University of Latvia (UL) Museum. It had suffered significantly over time, so beginning the restoration of the globe was essential.
The UL Foundation supported the need for restoration by announcing a collection of donations for the restoration in 2020. Public donations initially funded the globe's research, restoration preparation, and transportation to the restoration workshop.
The restoration of the Stellar Globe began in the spring of 2021 in the workshop of polychrome wood restorer Sarmite Balode in Malpils, thanks to a financial allocation from the Culture Capital Foundation of Latvia. In the presentation about the restoration process, we will learn about what was done and discovered during the restoration, the uniqueness of this work, and what will be done in the future.
Everyone who is interested is invited to participate online!
The Star Globe is intended to be the main focus of the newly opened UL Museum exhibition on the history of Latvian astronomy.
